While we have already rung in the New Year here in the United States, the Chinese New Year is still a couple weeks away. On January 26, 2009, the Chinese will celebrate their New Year, which is the Year of the Ox. So today’s kid activity involves making this Chinese New Year animal to commemorate the upcoming Chinese holiday. Luckily for me, last year was the Year of the Rat because I don’t have a lot of rat crafts!
What You Need to Make this Chinese New Year Animal: Ox
- Brown and cream construction paper
- Scissors
- Markers or crayons
- Glue
How to Make this Chinese New Year Animal: Ox
1. Cut out a four inch circle from the brown construction paper for the ox’s head.
2. Cut out an eight inch circle from the brown construction paper for the ox’s body.
3. Glue the small circle to the large circle, as shown above.
4. Cut four 4″ rectangles from the brown construction paper for the ox’s legs.
5. Glue the four rectangles to the bottom of the large circle.
6. Cut a small diamond from the brown construction paper for the ox’s tail.
7. Glue the ox’s tail to the right side of the large circle.
8. Cut an oval from the cream construction paper for the ox’s nose.
9. Cut two horns from the cream construction paper.
10. Glue the oval to the front of the small circle and the horns to the top of the small circle.
11. Use crayons or markers to draw on the ox’s two nostrils, eyes and mouth.
