CraftBoom! Asks 10 Questions

1. How long have you been in the craft business?

Amy: My first paid gig? Custom airbrushed t-shirts for my high school tennis team at age 16! Since then, I’ve sold everything from handmade books to body products, baby clothes to sewing patterns. If I make it, I’ll likely try selling it.

2. Where and how do you sell your items? Do you work from home?

Amy: Mostly on my website, occasionally in retail shops. I price for wholesale but direct sales simplify things. And yes, I work from home — alongside my three girls (ages 5, 3, and 4 months at the time of this interview).

3. What inspired you to start a craft business, and what did you do before?

Amy: I’ve always had side projects. But when I chose to stay home with my kids, it just clicked. Before that, I was an interior architect. I’ve shared my full story on CraftSanity Episode #27, which covers everything from college to now.

4. How did you finance your startup?

Amy: I didn’t! I used what I had — like my husband’s tech skills to build my site. Keeping expenses low helped me stay creative without pressure. It wasn’t about making tons of money; it was about making things.

5. How do you decide what to sell?

Amy: I never know! That’s why I created Mailorder — a club filled with patterns, recipes, and paper projects. It’s my version of a brain dump. I sell what I’d want to buy, then cross my fingers!

6. When did you realize your business had real potential?

Amy: When I did my taxes — and realized how much I owed! That hit hard. It was stressful, but also thrilling to see how far things had come.

7. How do you market your craft business?

Amy: Honestly, I don’t consciously market. It happens organically through my blog and creative community. Authenticity is everything. If you’re sincere and kind, the right people will find you. Pushy marketing is a huge turn-off.

8. What do you wish you knew from the beginning?

Amy: Aside from taxes? I don’t regret much. It’s been an organic, evolving path. No business plan. No loans. I’ve worked hard and stayed true to my values. Quitting my job freed my brain in ways I never imagined.

9. What do you love most (and least) about running your own business?

Amy: Most? Being my own boss. I can’t imagine working under someone else’s designs. Collaboration? Yes. But direction? No thanks.

Least? Time and support. Mailorder is growing, and I may need to outsource production. It’s bittersweet, but necessary.

10. What advice do you have for new craft business owners?

Amy: Be authentic. Be kind. And take your time. The blog world is full of amazing people, but also opportunists. If you’re emailing for advice, make it personal — get my name right, know my work. Genuine connection goes a long way.

Bonus Questions

Are you satisfied with the income from your business?

Amy: Absolutely — as long as I break even, I’m thrilled. Low expectations = creative freedom

What are your plans for the future?

Amy: With three kids, every day is different. I say yes only when I know I can follow through. That clarity helps me prioritize what matters most: family, creative joy, and flexibility.
