My second grader has been studying astronomy in school. Each day she is so excited to share with me what she’s learned about the planets and our solar system. I’m so impressed not only with all of the facts she’s remembered, but with her enthusiasm for learning about astronomy! Clearly this night sparked her interest!
One day after school she couldn’t wait to show me the websites her teacher was using to teach astronomy to kids. I checked these sites out and I totally agree. They make learning astronomy fun for kids!
Astronomy Websites for Kids
KidsAstronomy.com – This astronomy website features a moving diagram of the sun and the planets orbiting around it. To learn more about any of the planets, you click on the one you want and it brings you to a page with easily understandable information about that planet. This website also has astronomy activities for kids including crossword puzzles, word searches, coloring pages and jokes.
NASA Kids – This astronomy website helps kids learn the various terms that have to do with space by providing a Picture Dictionary. When a child clicks on a picture, a brief age-appropriate definition is provided. There are also brief video clips to help kids understand what it would be like to be aboard the space shuttle and the significance of finding water on Mars. This website also has astronomy activities for kids including mazes, coloring pages and memory games.
The Nine Planets – This astronomy website has more detailed information about each planet and the sun, amazing photos including an eruption on the sun, and incredible videos including one of a total solar eclipse.
So if your kids are interested in astronomy, I highly recommend these websites. They have a lot to offer!
